12 months ago we came up with the idea of starting a new night in Manchester, a place where people can come and enjoy themselves on the weekend while getting musically entertained by some of the world's greatest DJs. We always thought we'd try to be different, try to offer the scene an alternative night to the usual hangouts, somewhere special where we can all go and enjoy ourselves once a month. We had our ideals of how we'd like a club night to be run, putting it into practice was a different kettle of fish altogether.
We searched around for the right venue and ultimately decided on Club North, not our ideal choice but it was a well known venue and to be honest with venues being so few and far between in Manchester it was a case of take what you can get. The hard work that went into it at the beginning was definitely a lot more than we thought when we went into this, especially when you're relatively unknown in the historic Mancunian club scene - yeah, you maybe put on good line ups and promise great things but getting people to trust you to deliver a good night is a lot harder than it looks.
We opened up at the beginning of December with Joeski and had a relatively successful first night on the back of it, Joeski delivered as we knew he would and at the end of the night we were more than satisfied with what we'd achieved, we lost a bit of money which we always expected to do on the first few nights but we absolutely loved it and got the feeling the people that were there enjoyed it themselves as much we did.
The months passed and we entertained the likes of Yousef and Ralph Lawson and we began to see the same faces coming down. In April we launched the 'It's A Spiritual Thing' side of Tweak. IAST was born out of a night we used to do over in Leeds and was for the deeper, more soulful crowd. It was something we always meant to do with Tweak on a three monthly basis and for the first one we had the absolute honour of hosting Kevin Hedge from New Jersey production duo Blaze. We took a real chance with Kevin as people were beginning to trust us and it was the first time we'd ventured down the deep soulful route. The crowd that turned up that night were unbelievable, they all had one thing in common - they loved music, that tied in with our regulars we found a real atmosphere - 200 people coming together with someone like Kevin Hedge providing the soundtrack, created an amazing night.
We took the decision after that night to leave North, we found we had a nucleus of around 150-200 people that were enjoying what we were doing and thought that North was just to big a venue to carry it off, we did one more night there with our friends at YoYo from Liverpool, we made it a free goodbye party for all the people that supported us so far, and what a party it was.
The summer followed and we planned 2 parties on the IAST tip, 1 special party and 1 very special party. First up on the agenda was French DJ and Realtone Records supremo Franck Roger. We'd never seen Franck live before but had become addicted to his mixes on www.sounds-up.net over the past 6 months and we were dying to get him over. The party itself was for 120 people and took place in The Attic in Manchester, a crazy loft style venue perfect for what we wanted to do. We made sure everything was right on the night. We shipped in an OHM sound system, we even kept the venue secret and on Saturday 11th June we made it happen. We sold out for this event, and it was definitely a night to remember. We hooked up with other local night Under The Stairs and their resident Chris Feinmann warmed it up nicely before Franck Roger absolutely smashed it, if you were there that night you know exactly what we're on about.
Up to now we've made a lot of friends along the way who've helped us out so much with support and advice, the YoYo lads, Pimpsta, all the North East crew, Les and Scott from Stylus, our friends at North - Casamusica, Mark at Fat Cats and of course Tom Lynch and Chris Feinmann from up and coming Manc night Under The Stairs.
We'd had the next party planned for months but kept it quiet as a surprise for our regulars, at the end of July we moved over to Liverpool for a one off in what's probably our favourite room in the country - The Annexe at Cream's old venue, Nation. To add to the surprise we invited Danny Krivit & Joe Claussell from Body & Soul NYC for our biggest venture to date. Words cannot describe to us what it was like that night, and we're still smiling now thinking about what was a truly, amazing evening. It seemed that everyone that'd been to our nights since we started in December made the effort for this one, it was one of those nights we’d probably talk about for years to come. If you were there you'd know exactly what we're talking about. The crowd for us made that night special more than anything else and we'd like to thank everyone that's been to any of our nights over the course of the past 8 months. It's been a fantastic journey and without you it wouldn't have been possible at all.
After helping us out with the Franck Roger and Body & Soul night as well as their own successful monthly venture we’re delighted to announce that we're linking up full time with Under The Stairs to bring a monthly Saturday night residency to Manchester at The Attic. We've been working really hard getting things all tied down for the new venue and have been successful in bringing in some great DJs to play for us, between now and Christmas we'll be welcoming 5 Manchester debuts to our night and hope you'll be there to enjoy it with us. Tickets for these parties are going to be limited due to the overall capacity of the venue and we hope now you can trust us to deliver exactly what you're looking for. All the details can be found on the site as we prepare to get ready for our relaunch night on Saturday September 10th 2005.
Again, thanks for the love and support so far!
